Andrew Hamilton started his Chartered Accountancy business after running a successful business and being continually asked whether he would be willing to act as an Accountant for a growing number of clients.
Incorporating Hamilton Nicholson in 2018, Andrew and Jordan and the team have been best serving their clients in Otago, Southland, and further afield with all their accounting, advisory and compliance ever since.
Andrew Hamilton
BCom (Otago), FCA, CPP
Andrew has been in Public Practice for 28 years and is a Fellow of Chartered Accountants Australia New Zealand. Prior to this, he worked for Ernst & Young, mainly in Wellington. He is a member of the New Zealand Institute of Directors, and a director of several privately held companies. He was a guest lecturer at the Otago University Business School for a five-year period and is regularly involved in running workshops for the business, and not for profit sectors. Over the past 28 years, he has served on several different not for profit committees and boards, which has included Chair of Otago Committee of Chartered Accountants Australia New Zealand, Treasurer of Dunedin Stroke Club, Treasurer of the Dunedin Council of Social Services, and currently Treasurer of The Dunedin Symphony Orchestra, President of The Dunedin Club, Board member of Knox and Salmond University Colleges, and on the Advisory Committee of the K9 Medical Detection NZ Charitable Trust.
Andrew has a high level of involvement in Rotary and is a member of the Rotary Club of Dunedin Central. He served as the District Governor for Rotary District 9980, covering the lower half of the South Island from 1st July 2018 to 30 June 2019 and is currently the Rotary District 9980 Foundation Chair. Andrew is a member of the Presbyterian Church of Aotearoa NZ. He is married to Barbara and together they have two daughters.
Andrew grew up on a Northern Southland sheep, cattle and crop farm and loves getting into the outdoors when possible. In the mid-1990s, Andrew and Barbara owned and operated a retail book shop for five years. From this, they developed a book importing business. With real-life business experience, Andrew has always loved business and helping businesses through the challenges they often face, and this was the main catalyst for establishing the original accounting practice with Barbara in the 1990s. Buying his first investment property at 21, Andrew has had a long interest in both residential and commercial property. He loves classic cars, is a keen snow skier, reader, traveller, and enjoys lawn bowls, and has been a member of the Andersons Bay Bowling Club for over 20 years. With an interest in macroeconomics, he is always keen to have a coffee and try to solve the world’s problems!
Jordan Nicholson
BCom DipGrad CA CPP
Jordan comes from a farming background in Southland and moved to Dunedin to complete a Bachelor of Commerce degree at the University of Otago. He joined Andrew Hamilton’s growing accounting firm in 2009, and with Andrew started Hamilton Nicholson Chartered Accountants in 2018.
Coming from a rural background, Jordan has a good grounding in Agribusiness. He enjoys advising on business sales, purchases, and successions as well as forecasting and performance reporting.
Beyond providing performance reporting, Jordan likes to assist clients in understanding what their numbers mean and provide them with key business insights they can use to make informed business decisions.
Jordan is a member of BNI Dunedin City. Outside of work, he is kept busy spending time with family and attending his children’s various sports fixtures.
